Quite often the low entry, late side events (e.g. Blitz) have signup sheets which can easily be viewed before making one's entry. If you're the potential 4th entrant in a 4-player subfield, you can choose to play now or wait for another opportunity, depending upon the (perceived) skill levels of the first three.
