In the U.S., we also (optionally) put a zero before the decimal, though there has been a major shift towards omitting it in the last thirty or forty years.
I guess I never really thought about it. I usually put the zero before the decimal point, but I have no recollection of anybody teaching me one way or another.
(Old timers like me might also remember our teachers harping on us to double-space after periods and colons; now, single-spacing is standard.)
Ugh, am I an old timer now? I had a typing class as a freshman in high school -- learned on an electric typewriter, but not a computer -- and the teacher made us put two spaces after periods and colons. I still do it, and probably can't change my ways now... it would feel funny.
