large errors for lack of following convention

When even rocket scientists screw up SAE/Metric problems, I'd think that something like the leading 0 is a no brainer.
just do a cost-benefit analysis. the cost of the 0.X is practically nothing --- the resultant errors that come when #s are misinterpreted means that you result will likely be an order of magnitude or greater off.
consider a medical order for a drug "qwert" which has a large dosing range. the physician writes qwert .5mg --- and the order is faxed or otherwise electronically transmitted. the patient recieves a ten-fold overdose when the "." is obliterated by "noise". It's much harder to mistranscribe 0.5
