The left stroke (tail) on the European 1 is easy to tell apart from the left stroke of the American 7, both by angle and curvature. However, when you are seeing the other for the first time, or when writing is sloppy, it is natural to be confused.

I recommend to American tournament staff members to take extra care with their sevens (clear, level, and not too short, left stroke) and to add a small horizontal slash through the vertical stroke if there are any Continental attendees. And for European tournament staff members, I recommend keeping the 1's tail short and its angle on the vertical side of 45 degrees if there are any American attendees.

On the subject of things possibly being unclear who decided to make 15 and 50 sound so similar?

Sorry about that.

On the trading floor, it was common (at least where I was) to shout "FITty" for fifty (dropping the first f) and "f-TEEN" for fifteen (dropping a syllable).

Nack
