“I think there are four great mind games,” Bob Hamman tells me. “Chess, backgammon, poker, and bridge.
That's it eh? Four? Strong.
“The trouble with chess is that a small difference in skill is a huge difference on the scoreboard. If the other player is better, you lose.
A small difference in skill isn't a huge difference and simply because they're better doesn't mean auto-loss. Drastically overstated.
You either have to get better or quit the game. As soon as I figured that out, I quit.
Lol. What else is there to say ... you have to get better to succeed or quit? Well fuck that, I quit then!
It’s like being the second-best sprinter in the world. You’re still never going to beat Usain Bolt.
You aren't, not with your attitude.
Poker is not about cards; it’s about reading psychological situations. There’s no complex card play.
Clearly a world class poker player also.
Backgammon is a matter of positional evaluation and math. It’s a gambling game.”
This may have been the most accurate of anything he has said. Thanks for the humor column Bill, even though I doubt that's how you meant it. I laughed more in that one little paragraph than the rest of my day combined.
