I think you need to read between the lines. It sounds to me that he was interested in backgammon, chess, and poker for a while, but they didn't come that naturally to him and he just didn't have the drive to get really good at them. So he gave up on them. That doesn't preclude him from becoming fanatical about bridge.

In an interview, there is always the temptation to make pithy remarks that may sound cool even though they're ridiculous if examined closely. So I wouldn't infer too much from his commentary about games that he doesn't really care about any more.
