Bob: "When there are thousands of new bridge superduper life golden universe grandmasters every week one should ask that type of question".

Christian: Pretty impressive to be #7 on the world ranking list if this is the case.

In Denmark bridge is probably 50 times bigger than backgammon. I presume that the same goes for other countries. Therefore it is much, much more impressive to be considered among the best at bridge than at backgammon. Apples and oranges, really.

IMO the game of bridge has a lot going for it. A lot of different skills are required and it's a fast paced game with a social element. Bridge sort of combines the best from backgammon and poker.I have taken up bridge and it seems to me that the level of complexity is much higher in bridge than in backgammon and poker.

I think this has been done before, but on a complexity scale I would rank the 4 games Bob Hamann mentions like this:

Chess: 100 - Bridge: 98 - Backgammon: 90 - Poker: 60

(I think Go is probably higher than chess on the complexity scale)

How hard would it be to become world champion in the 4 games?

In chess only 2 or 3 people could do it.

In bridge very few could do it.

In backgammon probably 300-500 people or more have the skill to have a realistic shot if they were to enter. If you have a decent head then you can reach a very high level of play within relatively few years.

In poker pretty much anybody can become a world champion after a couple of years of intensive play, provided a decent head.
