While arithmetic helps, I'm not so sure how much it is required to compete at the top levels of backgammon. Unless you consider the ability to count to 36 or count pips arithmetic. Ask Falafel how much math he ever does playing the game. Ask him how often he actually counts pips.
An awful lot of the "complexity" of chess is the ability to do deep ply searches over the board. As computers have shown, you can be the best in chess if you can do this well.
In my opinion, Go is on another planet relative to any of these games.
