Complexity

Those that have been on the Backgammon scene the last 20 years can check Inside Backgammon Volume 2, Number 1 for an interesting discussion of the complexity topic. Complexity is defined by the number of steps between an absolute beginner to the best player in the world. Each step is defined such that the better player would win 75% of tournament games. For Backgammon a "game" was defined as a 25 point match. The list given is:
Go 40, Chess 14, Scrabble 10, Poker 10, Backgammon 8, etc.
Chess seems a little high to me, but not by much. I can't comment on Scrabble or Poker.
Of the other games I play, I would add my opinion that Shogi (a Chess variant) would be 18 and Othello 8. I expect that 20 years later the distance between the bottom and the top in Backgammon has widened and it would be slightly higher than 8.
