"Your example could just be showing there is more of a random element to backgammon which is not the same as it lacking complexity."
I'd swear someone wrote an article on this. I recall something to the effect of backgammon being like a contest in which you flip a coin for $100 and play a game of chess for $10. Who runs out of cash first and wins the contest is very volatile. Complexity is still equal to chess.
