Nactation for 21 played 24/21

Kye: What is the proper Nactation for a roll of 21 played 24/21? 21R seems most logical but www.nackbg.com/nactation.pdf defines R as "moving (running) a back checker to the outfield." I would interpret 21U to be 24/22 24/21 although U is defined to be "advancing back checker(s)." The unspecified singular or plural seems to leave U ambiguous.

Nack: U = 24/21, and V = 24/22 24/21.
Leonardo and Gregg provided the crispest articulation:
"If there are two possible up plays with the roll, the play that moves the leading checker closest to home is nactated U, and the other play is V."
That passage can be found at the end of the "V" segment (in Section 5) of the tutorial you mentioned above (clickable).
The primary member of the U family is U, and the secondary member is V. (Then u, v, U, v, u and v, though you seldom need to go past V unless there are multiple checkers back, and even then it would be rare to dabble in italics.)
Using "R" to describe 24/21 (as you suggested) is unorthodox though acceptable, as long as there are no checkers between the 24pt and midpoint (e.g., in the position above). If other checker(s) are there, you can still use a member of the R family, if you like. For example, in the position below, R = 16/13, r = 16/14 24/23, R = 16/15 24/22, and r (though more typically U) = 24/21.
Nactation is a relative system, and it is designed such that ordinary capital letters usually describe the best plays. At the same time, the lower case and italic forms exist as a resource should an unorthodox play be made or you wish to list or analyze such a play.
