Is it even possible to reach that position with normal, let alone optimal play?

Yes, I believe it is possible, even with optimal play. This position (for example) could reasonably be reached:

From here, the following sequence can occur (with Blue's rolls and plays on the left, White's rolls and plays on the right):

3) 11: 6/5(4) ... 11: No move
4) 42: 5/3 5/1 ... 11: No move
5) 22: 5/3(4)

... and we reach the target position (with White on roll):
