In the basement of the Gambit game store, circa 1977, Duane Clark had had an unbearably bad run of luck against me.

Finally, he thought he had me dead to rights: I held his ace point and he had fourteen checkers off with only one more to go, which was on his 2pt. However, he rolled double aces (the only number not to bear off his final checker).

Duane groaned loudly, but I missed the ace shot.

Then Duane rolled double aces again. He made no sound this time but he threw his cup across the room and it bounced off the far wall.

I missed the ace shot again. Duane failed to roll double aces a third time and he bore off.

Sorry for the anticlimactic ending.
