In Response To: What's a pip worth? (Alejandro)

Alejandro,

Welcome to the forum. I see it this way:

Yes, bot data is welcome here, and posted constantly. However, this is a discussion forum, a place for a meeting of minds of backgammon enthusiasts of all levels of expertise. When people post positions, usually they want other players -- expert, advanced, novice -- to respond with explanations, questions, answers, and discussion about how they would go about solving those problems over the board.

Often the person posting a position has already consulted a bot, done rollouts, etc. Usually, that person will post a rollout and his own thoughts after allowing a day or several days for others to participate in a discussion about the position.

Everyone here one or more bots and can consult bots about positions posted here. But I don't want to see every position immediately answered with a rollout or other bot data. I'm hear to learn how other players think and to exchange ideas. If I only wanted bot data, I wouldn't ask here. I'd just do have my own bots do the work -- exceptions being if I would like to ask someone else to consult a bot I don't have, or to share some bot data that someone probably already has.

Of course, sometimes a poster specifically seeks bot data or is discussing what a bot does with a position. Then it's fine to provide that data right away, if you have it.

Otherwise, if there's a ongoing discussion about a problem, and you consult a bot, and feel you simply must share your often very interesting findings, please change your subject heading to indicate that your post contains bot data. That way anyone who doesn't want to know "the answer" can skip your post entirely.

I specifically noted "no bots" in my post. But I don't usually bother to write that, because I think it's usually implied when I post a position or when someone else does.

Sorry I've gone on too long, but just a final note -- (1) the opinions and analysis expressed here tend to be very informed and well-reasoned -- it's not all "mere speculation" -- and (2) more often than you might think, we human speculators are more accurate than the bots.
