As for general principles, all of your suggestions are of course valuable, but my belief is that in the long run the most effective strategy is to remember reference positions. Doing so will also help you identify which positions require calculation (checking all the rolls, for example).

Playing by feeling is really playing by means of poorly remembered reference positions. It's better than nothing but the larger the stock of carefully studied positions you have in your brain, the better you will play.

Here this position reminds me of another position I faced recently when I was outboarded and had a chance to make what looked like a risky double hit. If it worked then I could extricate my back checkers and perhaps get a strong advantage by hitting more outfield blots. If it didn't work I would probably get gammoned. In that position I chose not to hit and got slowly crushed. Rollouts showed that the double hit was right by a lot. Hard to say whether this position should be viewed the same way but it looks similar, so I would double hit.
