54S-63

One of the things that surprise me is the 63 play. From bot rollouts of similar positions, I have learned that this probably should be played 13/7 8/5*, which was not even on my radar screen before bot rollouts (I'd play 24/18 8/5* or 24/15, more often the first). And if I play such move myself, the results are terrible (same for 64 P on the opening roll). Does the book discuss the 13/7 8/5* play as well?

Yes (including diagrams), though not at length.

I have never had anything but 54S-63R played against me. H (Hit, 13/7 8/5*) is not only best but it's a marvelous move to make as the stronger player (which means that 90% of people should gravitate towards it on that basis alone :)

The plays are diagrammed below with (money, bot aggregate) error sizes encaptioned.

Blue played H (Hit, 13/7 8/5*), best

1O ' ' ' '5X1O4X ' ' '5O

1X ' ' '1O5O '2O ' ' '4X

Blue played X (hit-and-split, 24/18 8/5*) -.015

1O ' ' ' '5X '4X '1O '5O

1X ' ' '1X5O '3O ' ' '4X

Blue played R (Run, 24/15), -.019

At gammon save, R (diagrammed just above) crosses over and is right by a hair, according to a short (5k) GnuBG rollout: s[R H1.1 $4.1 X11 Z11]. Stick will probably be posting a gammon save rollout on XG soon.

Key: H = Hit (13/7 8/5*), X = hit-and-split (24/18 8/5*), R = Run (24/15), $ = Slot (13/4), Z = reverse split (24/21 13/7).

Error sizes are in thousandths; so, in the result of the previous paragraph, at gammon (s)ave, R is best, H is -.0011, $ is -.0041, and X and Z are -.011.
