Annoyed... two steps forward, two steps backward

I agree with Joe's suggestion of organizing errors into groups that at least seem to be of the same type, and looking them over say a couple of months from now, then maybe six months after that etc. I think it was 1998 when I first decided to divide a 3-ring binder into 16 sections, then choose the 16 areas of the game that seemed to give me the most trouble. I would collect problems of those types that I got wrong, or got right but had trouble figuring out. I'd then try to find whatever principles were hiding there, to help me get similar problems right in the future.

Well, over the years this project grew to 37 problem types, and there were so many individual pages that the original 16 became a 3-notebook set. I also got a file box for the other types. I began including positions from games I watched, since other people seemed to be having the same issues. I ended up with a separate notebook for one of the original 16 types I had simply called "Containment", because I found nine subgroups within that class of problems.

This game isn't easy! But a little organization can help you use the limited time you can give it to better advantage.
