html tips: bullet lists

Thanks, Ken, for providing the links. However, even with instructions in front of me I'm having difficulty. That is, you and Stick can count me in among the dummies!

Here is what happens when I try to create simple bullets:

<.li>First item
<.li>Second item
<.li>Third item

That is exactly how I typed it, except that I added the necessary line breaks (open-angle-bracket b r space slash close-angle-bracket) at the beginning of the second and third lines. Each <.li> is supposed to turn into a little round disc, and presumably the lines are supposed to indent; neither is happening.

What am I doing wrong?
