Some people only bring their A game to where it counts, to the majors. Tiger has noted in the past for example that he uses the tournaments leading up to the majors as practice. They aren't trying to win, they're trying to better their game for when it really counts. I haven't looked up either players record on clay outside of the French and unless Borg's record is abysmal it won't sway me. Only now is Nadal learning that he might have to pull it back (less tournaments, how he plays leading up to the big ones) in order to show up for the ones he wants to win due to health problems.
