http://www.epa.gov/radon/pdfs/402-r-03-003.pdf ? It's a long report from 2003.
Quickly browsed this -- I gather they took actual lung cancer deaths, made a whole lot of assumptions about the extent of exposure to radon and the effects of [long-term] exposure at various levels to men and women estimated to be ever, never and former smokers, and applied a formula chosen to between two previously developed models to estimate the percentage of lung cancer deaths that were due to radon exposure (about 14%, in (I think) 1995).
So .. sample size? doesn't seem to apply. But I surely may have misunderstood the intricate details of their methodology.
Expalin it to me in English. The report was in a foreign language ;-
