The limited cross-pollination of players in US rated events is a legitimate concern.

As you can see from the discussion, this is not so simple. I can say that all of these issues raised here has been discussed within the Ratings and Stats committee.

I have also spoken at length some time back with Steen who is quite knowledgeable about the Danish system. That well regulated system extends down to local events, cafes, etc. where skill levels are all combined. So the few major events that separate by skill level do not dominate the ratings. I look forward to the day when the USBGF has such broad reach and participation. We are not yet ready for this.

Ultimately, we believe that we are best served by a system in which there is a single pool of players and we can categorize events by skill levels. We have that. Like in Denmark, if rated events might one day extend to regional and club levels, we should be able to categorize those events as such. It could be possible to include special online events, categorized as such. Future software development should make it possible to dice and slice and report on the data as desired.

One step at a time.
