Jim Pasko often slots his 7 and 5 points with an opening 6-1.
Opening 61N
Thanks... didn't realize someone was still playing it. Another well-known proponent of 61N (can also be written 61&) was Paul Magriel; he tried it for a couple years (around 1980) before declaring it made him a 6:5 dog to weaker players and gave it up.
There is only one published game that I know of with opening 61N. In Backgammon Master Games (Kennedy/Papazian, 1981), game 39, Paul Magriel, trailing 1-5 to 7 pts, opened with 61N, and Vladimir Dobrich replied with 21U (i.e., Up, 24/21). Paul then doubled but eventually lost the game and match.
