RE: "Title" This may not count at all with you folks, but I did not merely invent this title on my website. A group of Turks and Germans [calling themselves Institut fur Strategiespiele] ran an on-line tournament through the MSN Zone for about four years in the early 2000s that they called the World Internet Backgammon Championship. In August 2002, I won their tournament. As I clearly stated on my websoite, I started playing in 1997, and don't play nearly as well as this title suggests.
Description [also on my website]: This "world championship tournament" [the quote marks are on my web page] was an open single-elimination event, with 400 or so entrants from roughly thirty countries, many of whom had been at it for more than 25 years. But luck always plays a role in backgammon, and I did manage to win nine straight matches (13 to 27 points each), including three against world-class players rated in the top-100 or so. [I made the Final 16 when trying to defend my title in 2003, but alas ... .] Other interests have kept me from playing much in the last seven years or so, although I do play in "live" tournaments about once a year.
