Is it really broke?

This is the first I've even heard that late entry is a problem. We can all speculate about what the current 'problem' is with backgammon tournament attendance. This one is far down on my list.
It's easy to say the late penalty would have a small effect. But I like evidence, and I see none.
BTW, I just this week wrote Howard asking if I was supposed to preregister for Monte Carlo, and he assured me that there was not such thing. Is preregistration less of a practice in Europe, or just this one tournament?
At the recent Chicago tournament the penalty was supposed to be appended if you didn't sign up several (something like 3 weeks) in advance. The deadline for penalty free registration was further ahead than the cutoff date for advanced hotel registration (~2 weeks). I missed the deadline but 'talked' Rory into waiving the penalty when I signed up about two weeks in advance. How would I have felt if he didn't rescind the late fee? Good thing it didn't come to that.
I certainly have concern for Ty directors, so if early signup is important, they should explain that, stress that, and use positive reinforcement. Fear motivation is great if you're a religious zealot. Otherwise you need something more substantive, IMO. Backgammon players as a whole use their brains to make decisions a lot more than the general dufus public, in my experience.
