It seems that a lot of readers are reasoning this way and I confess that I don't understand the logic. When we have a bunch of stacks and a virgin board and the opponent has a guard on the ace point along with an advanced anchor, the chances are that we'll be leaving a direct shot soon. It would make sense to try to play safe if we could reasonably expect to continue playing safely, but that doesn't look likely. Hitting on the ace isn't a tempo hit; it's more of a pay-now-or-later decision.
