This technology exist in Chess and i dont see why it couldn't be ported to Backgammon: there is a small chip in each piece and the board can detect their position.

An easy to write software can then determine the position from the XY coordinates, generate the moves from one position to another, and show trials.
For BG, it should work (except maybe for checker put on top of each other when there are more than 5 on a point).
The main issue is the dice. Adding a chip in the dice so the board can determined his face could work, but will people accept to roll these dice? An electronic dice generator is possible but again i am not sure people are ready to use that.
Maybe a company such as DGT would be intrested to get into a new market!
