USBGF - For the Future

There are all kinds of ways to support and bring money into the USBGF, and any that the tournament directors and players support are fine with me...the money will clearly only be used to promote backgammon, and eventually we will certainly see more players at tournaments. More players means more money and fun at the tournaments, but it also greatly increases the chances of attracting sponsors, and that can add even more money (and fun).
The USBGF has a plan to raise money through memberships, and they hope to get lots of members because it's a good cause, but also because the members will get certain benefits as a result of joining. Some think these benefits are terrific and will cause lots of people to join, others say the players don't care...they won't part with $15 or $40 unless they have to. And there are others, like you, who see the long-term benefits of promoting this game to the general public, who are willing to donate money any way they can. Some people even stepped up and put in several thousand dollars each to get the ball rolling.
The main thing is that people like you, Perry, and the many others who are donating their time and efforts are setting an example that the rest of us can follow. Maybe tournament players would be willing to give a percent of their winnings as a donation to the USBGF. If you win a tournament and make $5,000, maybe 1%, or $50 would be an easy donation. If everyone who wins anything at a tournament donates 1%, or 2%, or even 3% of their winnings, that could be several hundred dollars a tournament.
As a matter of fact, I have already made donations to the USBGF, but I am willing to pledge that I will give 3% of anything I make at a tournament to the USBGF as an additional donation. I hope others will do the same.
Now, a strong argument can be made that I'm not offering much compared to, a Fogerlund or Kazaross or someone who is likely to win a lot more...but those people, the ones who win the most, have the most to gain from the game growing and from their being more people at tournaments and more sponsorship.
So maybe we can start some trends here, or if nothing else, raise awareness for the importance of supporting the USBGF.
