Meyer Dice Tube

Now we come to the turn ending 'tap'. Again you may be thinking you have to hit the plunger of a clock for your turn to end, along the same lines right? No, perhaps not even the same ballpark. When you hit the plunger of a clock typically you can do it with some force, your hand is letting gravity take its due course and bam, turn over. You can be off by a little bit, your fat hand will make sure to find its mark. With the Meyer tube you have to give this little puffy tap clear on the top of the tube, a light tap lest it fall over, and you're stretching constantly every turn to reach the tube, turn the tube, hit it again to end your turn. It's too much in my opinion.

My problem with the "tap" is that there is no way to prove that you did or did not tap the tube, whereas with the clock, it's unambiguous. If your clock stops, then you hit the plunger.

Perhaps part of my bias against this stems from my same hatred of baffle boxes. I don't see the need and I find them a detraction from the game. If precision dice are being used, if lipped cups are being used, if the rules are being followed there is little or no use for these gadgets.

if the rules are being followed. Why is it that I feel like an asshole when I have to ask my opponent to shake his ******* dice? Maybe because whenever I make that request, my opponent gets all pissy, even though I was right the whole time.

Two weeks ago, at the club, I was playing a guy who is notorious for making unbelievable numbers of illegal moves. The week prior, I unfortunately had to play him three times, during which I estimate with no hyperbole that he attempted around 20 illegal moves, the majority of which were illegal in his favor.

So, in order to prove to him that he was cheating, I videotaped the match. During the course of the match, he twice rolled without shaking. Both times, I called him on it, and he vigorously denied it. So I said, "Really, you're going to stick to that story? Well, guess what, maybe you forgot that I'm videotaping the match. Shall we go to the instant replay and see that you really didn't shake the dice?" Funny, he backed down from his claims at that moment.

I hate this part of the game. I just loathe it. I follow the rules, and on the exceedingly rare occasions when I mess up, I don't attempt to deny it. But I see rules violations all the time:

  • Not shaking the dice
  • Premature pickup (when playing with clocks)
  • Premature rolling (when playing without clocks)
  • Sliding the dice after making a legal play (see the latest issue of the Chicago Point for a letter to the editor about this)
  • Not keeping score on paper

So yeah, if the rules are followed, then I don't see a need for baffle boxes. But as long as the masses cannot seem to follow the simple rules, then I'm not so sure.
