I'm afraid your point is lost on me. In my experience, backgammon has been anything but "local" in outlook. Indeed, one of the reasons I've enjoyed backgammon so much is that through it I've met so many people from all over the globe -- people who enjoy meeting and passing time with such people. If there's any intention among organizers to exclude "non-locals" I'm completely unaware of it.

The tournament's website lists the top ten finishers. I'd be curious to know how many pairs participated and what the payout structure was at this big money event.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/10/crosswords/bridge/10card.html has some details -- the auction's prize pool was divided among the buyers of the top 10, and whoever bought the winning pair in the auction for $62,000 made a $139,200 profit!
