Yes, like a lot of reminiscences, we will never relive those days, nor will we ever relive the days of the present.
It was exciting! And you have captured much of the reasons -- no bots, so every disagreement was a potential prop. Every bar had multiple house boards that patrons could use. Almost everyone thought s/he was a competent player, and everyone had a higher opinion of his own game than was deserved. Magazines were ripe with articles. Famous people from many walks of life were featured. And there was $ to be made for those who wanted to go down that path.
Where would the stars of today have been then? Right up with the stars of then, I'm sure.
They probably think they have the best of it, and they well could be right. But I wouldn't trade my spot from back then, as insignificant as it was..., nor my spot today, as insignificant as it is.
Those few of us who have stuck with it (and there are many more pertinent than I, like Perry G., Kit W., and Mike C. to name but a few) to experience both eras are the truly fortunate ones.
Thanks for reminding me how great this game was and is..., and will be.
