In Response To: XG Question for Xavier (eXtreme Gammon)

I don't own XG but my understanding is that on the default settings, the bot filters the moves through higher and higher settings, discarding low-scoring moves at each stage and keeping only a subset of possible moves for deeper analysis.

As a result, it's possible for (say) only the two highest-scoring moves, as judged by 4-ply, to be analyzed by XGR+, and for XGR+ to discover that their equities both fall below the 4-ply equity of some other move(s).

One way to interpret Paul's question is, if this happens, why doesn't the bot "notice" this and decide to go back and do an XGR+ analysis of any move whose 4-ply equity exceeds the XGR+ equity of the "top" move?

My answer to this question is that in most cases, such a procedure would slow things down, and in most cases would not change the final result. The reason is that the bots tend to be better at judging relative equities than at judging absolute equities. Thus, most of the time, 4-ply will correctly judge which plays need further analysis, even if it overestimates their absolute equities. Forcing XGR+ to evaluate more plays will usually not change the overall result.

Having said that, I suppose you could add a filtering option that forces the bot to keep evaluating moves until all the lower-ply equities fall below the equity of the top move (as judged by the current ply level).
