I didn't know that I didn't know how to play this kind of position

In #1 with a 54 to play you're obviously covering with the four and then looking around and finding the best five. You don't want to leave 80 trillion blots so 14/9 is out, you don't want to play checkers deep in your home board while you still have other more important things to do like bringing the rest of your checkers home so 8/3 is out. That leaves 16/11, making a point you'll want to clear as soon as possible later, and 11/6 which goes nicely to the 6pt. This is my choice, 11/2.

In #2 did I mention that if for some reason I made the 11pt it would be the one I wanted to clear immediately? Putting a spare to the 6pt can't be a bad idea again, I see the five as forced, 11/6. After that I look around for the best tre. Again, I don't really want to make the 11pt because I just want it clear and gone. I can leave 3 shots or 4 shots by playing either 11/8 or 10/7. Less shots and more flexibility for my checkers, 11/8 11/6 looks like the plan.
