Let's suppose that some weeks everything just seems to "click". My technique is good, my swing is under control, I have a good feel for the course. Other weeks things don't click at all.

If I could find a way to make things click every week, I would call that skill. But if things click some weeks and don't click other weeks, I would call it good luck when they click and bad luck when they don't.

Besides, I don't think there is any way to tell the difference. A player might tell you he was playing well on a particular day. But does he really know? I suspect that players underestimate the role that luck plays in golf because the source of the luck is not as obvious in golf as it is in backgammon.
