Luck and skill in golf

In Response To: SHG My experience (Stick)

There is an interesting paper by Croson, Fishman, and Pope entitled "Poker Superstars: Skill or Luck?" in Chance magazine (which you should be able to find using Google Scholar) that compares the luck/skill involved in poker to the luck/skill involved in golf.

These debates are fun but the trouble is that there is no way of quantifying luck and skill across different games in a way that everyone will agree on.

In fact I'm almost tempted to try to write down some axioms that any definition of "luck" and "skill" ought to satisfy and then prove an impossibility theorem that says that there is no way to satisfy all the axioms...
