Please can you explain me what is three-player playoff format? Thanks.

We had a discussion here in January about these, because we ran into a couple in Madison over the last few years. Here are the threads:

While intellectually I like Joe Russell's method, most players that I know respond badly to it in practice. We will use a simpler method:

  1. Lump the prize money for 1st, 2nd and 3rd together.
  2. Each of the three players gets 1/6 of the prize pool.
  3. Randomly draw for a first round bye.
  4. The winner of the first round match is paid 1/6 of the prize money.
  5. The winner then plays the bye player for the other 1/3 of the money and the trophy.

The two players that have to play an extra round have equity: 1/6 + (50% of 1/6) + (25% of 1/3) = 1/3. The player that gets the bye has equity: 1/6 + (50% of 1/3) = 1/3.

It does mean unequal equity for the trophy and ABT points after the random draw, but since that equity is equal before the draw, most people will accept the method as fair.
