Neil's Madison format

...the fixation among some/many that players should never play against each other twice in the same event...I hope we are finding the appropriate middle ground on this one. Our second year running the Swiss, we placed a higher priority on pairing like records. We almost had the top two players playing three times in the first 8 rounds. Here we are avoiding that early and then relaxing it as we get to the end.
To play out Neil's scenario, if the 9-1's had already played each other, they may each have to play a 7-3 in one round. At the end of round 11, there would be either 5, 6 or 7 players left. The 7-4's would get nothing, the 8-3's would get paid out and the two players that were 9-1 would play each other for the trophy. If both are 9-2, one match would decide it. If one was 10-1, the 9-2 would have to win twice. If both were 10-1, we could either do best 2 of 3 or perhaps get them to agree to one longer match for the trophy.
IMO, there were two weaknesses of the Indy Swiss movement, and one of them is still present in the Wisc(ke)y Swiss movement -- that being the juggling of the format as the event progresses, so maybe this one is inevitable. The other was the length of time (i.e. number of matches) required for the playoffs, which was of course more evident in the Consolation bracket.I hope we are addressing your second point too. It is a tremendous feat to get to 8-3 or 9-3 in a tournament and many players are tired after eleven 9pt matches in a weekend. When we pay off the x-3's, we are in effect short-circuiting the consolation and avoiding a couple of matches where the stakes aren't really that high to begin with.
