In Response To: Three -player playoff format (neilkaz)

Neil, Thank you for articulating a bunch of points that I was struggling to say clearly.

  • Three player playoff is extremely unlikely. Seems to me that about 1/30 of tournament solutions end this way. Don't ask me to prove that number.
  • Three player playoff is different if one or two of the players had an early round bye. Neil's description is excellent.
  • In the specific example you cited, yes, doing another round of Swiss is the right thing to do, as long as we pair two of the 9-2's. If all three played against the 8-3's, it is possible to have nobody eligible to win. We would have to relax the "repeat pairings" rule in this situation.
  • Edge cases are a bitch. They are rare, but it is really hard to predict and document all of things that can happen in this format. To date, players have been extremely helpful in our tournament, by offering solutions to odd situations and in accepting the decisions of the directors. I expect no different this year.
