Daniel "But considering the difficulty in finalizing a playoff system that is fair, transparent and covers all possibilities, I wonder if a playoff system is obviously better than simply ending the tournament after 11 rounds?"
I respond..I think you're missunderstanding the complete picture here. The Swiss elimination doesn't end after 11 rounds unless there's only 1 player remaining with fewer than 3 losses in which case he is the winner. Given 45 players (what I expect based on economy) this is an usual result but can happen if someone goes 10-1 or 11-0 and then you have 5 or 6 at 8-3 who share 2nd thru 6th or 7th place.
More likely is that after 11 rounds there are two players with fewer than 3 losses remaining, perhaps both 9-2 or one 10-1 and one 9-2 and they play one or two matches as needed to determine the winner (last one with less than 3 losses) and every else left at 8-3 is finished and splits 3rd thru 6th or 7th depending upon how many players are 8-3.
There's no need for any formal playoff structure and the only time the 8-3's play another round is if there are somehow (extremely unlikely with less than 50 players) at 9-2. This is to avoid any need for a 3 player playoff since I fear that ABT points (not my decision) won't be distributed fairly so as to make the compensated bye to the finals meaningless.
In closing I can say that I've played this Labor Day Event about 20 times and everytime has been with a playoff structure and almost every year there are issues and unfairness. This full Swiss elim to the end is so much better.
