Thanks Neil. I don't think there was much I hadn't understood. But you never know -- or I never know!

Where you wrote "this is an usual result" I've understood you to mean "this is an unusual result" and where you wrote "is if there are somehow (extremely unlikely with less than 50 players) at 9-2" I've understood you to mean "is if there are somehow (extremely unlikely with less than 50 players) 3 players at 9-2.

One thing I may not understand is where you write about the additional rounds between the remaining players with fewer than 3 losses. You wrote "perhaps both 9-2 or one 10-1 and one 9-2 and they play one or two matches as needed to determine the winner (last one with less than 3 losses).

Does that mean if after 11 rounds A was 11-0 and B was 9-2 they might have to play as many as 3 more matches against each other (for B to eliminate A with 3 straight wins)?

Another is where Bill's rule says: "3. Players with 3 losses are still eligible to cash, but can no longer win the tournament." One question would be: what if at the end of a round there are X players with 3 losses and no players with less than than 3 losses? Another is: suppose that after only 8 or 9 rounds you've reached your predetermined number of payout places. Does that mean the tournament is over, except for whatever playoff may be necessary?

I guess the main thing I'm not understanding -- having read how the tournament directors are trying to write rules to handle (a) whether 3-loss players continue (b) a 3-player playoff formula (c) repeat byes and (d) repeat pairings -- is: Why not simply set the number of rounds at 11, determine in advance to pay all players 8-3 or better according to a transparent formula, and be done with it? If players were tied for best record after 11 rounds, would there be something wrong with having co-champions?

Finally, it's quite possible that I'm not fully understanding Neil's reference to "issues and unfairness" at past tournaments that this year's rules are attempting to (successfully) address.

I've come up with a variable (but transparent!) payout structure for paying all 3-loss or better players -- ABT points could be likewise divided -- but I'll save that for another time.
