This hypothetical situation you describe is what happens every week at the Bar Point Club.
1. I don't believe there are any written or unwritten obligations, however, I think it is nice if leaders in the backgammon community, such as you, set a good example and don't just show up where there are tournaments and not support them by just playing for money. We do have people that do that every week (mostly, the Russians), and Bill charges them each $5 just to attend. 2. Since the first tournament is full, you can't play in that one, and the second one is often full or close to it. In a case like this, it is far less important that you play in the tournament. When you go to a place where tournament attendance is low, and attendance is critical to the organizer to keep the event going and profitable, it is another story. So in this case, I don't think you have any obligation to play in the tournament. 3. You are forgetting one critical point: if you play in the chouette, that will encourage more people to get into the tournament.
