My Rollout

The answer to my own rollout doesn't differ from MCG's by much, just some of the details. In short I was told that I had the wrong attitude when it comes to the social aspects of the game. When I inquired as to why this person thought that I was quoted that one time when I visited Chicago and came to the weekly Bar Point tournament I didn't enter the Open Division.

To review, it would be next to impossible for me to enter the Masters (the first tournament) as it is filled weeks in advance and I, much like MCG, can't see ahead that far. Just like Bill Riles recent post asking who would be in Ft. Lauderdale (next weekend) and who would be in Madison (3 weeks from now) I have nfc where I'll be in 3 weeks. I've been back in Ohio for all of 2 days, I have to let my head stop spinning from traveling before I can look that far into the future. I would virtually never be able to play in the first tournament because there's no way I would have planned a trip to Chicago that far in advance.

This leaves me with the option when I'm there of playing in the second tournament or not playing at all. Aside from the problems with the second tournament that MCG listed which has never honestly figured into my equation, it takes too big of a devotion time wise with how it is set up, I can either play chouette for the first couple of hours and then switch to the tournament or I can play chouette all night...

Let me say a few things that are off topic but on topic. When I'm in Paris, France for example I often go to their weekly club. You know what I do there? Maybe something even worse, others can judge for me, I usually don't play at all. I don't play in the main tournament, I don't play in the other tournament (forget how they refer to it), I don't play in chouettes. I come, I hang out, I drink. Why???

Here's why, I don't like the frustration of entering an event where I have to play people that are so bad and more than likely I'm going to lose to one of them along the way. It is probably not kosher to come out and say it, but that's how I feel and the annoyance isn't worth it to me. It's the same reason I get fed up with poker MTTs. Often the aggravation isn't worth it to me and I know that going in. Take a second to think about how it must feel to almost always clearly outplay your opponents and come up a winner 65% of the time? It sucks. Don't bother telling me it's part of the game or that's something I should have come to terms with long ago with what I do. I know, I know, and I know. Not many games/sports are the way bg and poker are though. If I outplay my opponent in tennis for eg, esp. if the skill difference is as big as it is v. my bg opponents, I would win 95% of the time easily. It's a weakness of mine to get annoyed, I avoid it by not entering when I know at the end of the day all it will do is piss me off and the nuisance isn't worth the kickback.

If it was my own weekly club in Columbus I'm sure I'd go as often as possible and enter the first tournament for sure. We had a club for a while when I started playing and I was there as far as I can remember every time it was possible and entered the tourney every single time. (not that there was much choice, it wasn't held at a bar and there were no chouettes lol) If we did have a club though I would be there with bells on and enter the tournament but that's local...when I'm traveling, basically on vacation hanging out with Carter or Rory or MCG or whoever, if I don't feel like playing guess what? I'm not going to play. Just like in Paris - just like in Nice when I didn't enter the tournament there last year because I didn't feel like it - Just like this year in Menton when I didn't enter the tournament because I didn't feel like it. It was sunny, there were beaches, I had other priorities. Maybe the TDs think I had the wrong attitude towards the game because I was at their tournaments but wasn't playing?

Of course when I do show up at any weekly club event I eat like 100% of the time. I also drink on the rare occasion the bar carriers Beam or Crown or even just rum and being a former bartender tip well. I get an A++ for all these side details as far as I'm concerned. I would also have no problem paying a small fee to the organizer if I decided not to play in one of the tournaments though I don't know if everyone would feel this way. I don't know the logistics of the entire operation but I imagine some ppl could say gfy because the tournaments are usually held in a bar, hotel, etc... and the TD has no given right to charge for anyone's mere presence at the event.

I do not know how many times overall I've been to this club, I'm going to guess 3 times but anyone feel free to correct me if you know. I also know I have in the past entered at least one of these tournaments but again, I don't know the details because I don't keep track of that kind of stuff. In fact, when I was told about my bad attitude towards social bg, I had no idea I had ever skipped playing in a tournament that someone would take in a bad way.

So for those of you who said I had an obligation to play, do you still think the same given the additional details? (the fact that I can't play in the first tournament and that I'm only there once a year I'd guess on 'vacation') I didn't want to bias any opinions initially so I stuck the question out there as best I could. The club is thriving from what I can tell as an outsider, always filling the 1st tourney and often doing the same in the second from what I am told. It's not as if this is a local tourney like what we had in Columbus where we might end up with 6-9 players and think 'not terrible'.
