I agree with all you've said. I believe that every tournament in the country, including club tournaments, should require clocks--it's good practice for major tournaments, and it keeps the game moving. Many people work, and if you play in Bill's second tournament you might not get out of there until 1 AM...often it's because of 2 or 3 really slow players that hold everyone up.
Matt, if you do enter the second tournament, there is no obligation to play consolation...I have often forfeited my consolation match to play chouette or to go home..so that's a reasonable option for you as well. The ONLY reason I might play consolation now is that I am fighting it out for the No. 1 spot and it's a very close race, so every point is critical (and there are many people cheering for me...I thought it was because I am so popular, but Carter was kind enough to tell me that it was because the guy who is in number one, just a couple of points ahead of me, is Rory).
There is certainly no formal "obligation" to support club events, but most of us do think it's pretty sleazy to show up and not play (as many of the Ruskies and a few low-lifes do).
There are other ways to support backgammon than just entering. You can write some articles for Bill's newsletter. You can donate a gift now and then (as I have done for years) to offer as a special prize for either winning the tournament or beating Carter or Rory. (I usually bring a bottle of booze worth between $20 and $40.) And you can support those events that are not filled in advance (as you do) including the Sunday monthly's etc.
