Insightful comment about luck versus skill

I still think chess is a game of pure skill even though the better player doesn't always win. But it also depends somewhat on how you look at it.

Let's say you're playing a superior player and he makes an uncharacteristic blunder and loses. From his perspective, he certainly can't blame it on bad luck; he just wasn't skillful enough today. But from your perspective, it was purely fortuitous that he made the blunder; you didn't do anything to induce it, and he could just as well have had his bad day against some other opponent. I guess you could call that luck if you wanted to, but I still think it's a skill issue.

A game of pure skill does not imply that everyone performs at the exact same skill level every time they play it.
