Bringing a mechanic with you is not enough -- a "visual check" won't disclose hidden problems. You have to take a used car to an AAA center or a service station where they can perform a proper diagnostic test, check underneath the car, run the car on the equivalent of a treadmill, and do a test drive. Also make sure you have a Carfax vehicle history report to see if there's anything suspicious, such as too many past owners or an extended period of non-use or non-registration. If you're buying from a private party, be more wary, especially if the private party has no ties to the community or is about to move away. Ask for maintenance and service records. If buying from a dealer, try to get any statements or promises from them in writing. Be wary if they refuse to put things in writing. Check online for recall notices and find out if the car was brought in for the recall correction. Do your homework online about comparable prices. Bring with you printouts of the lowest prices you find.
