Everyone else's advice is good, but somehow I wouldn't have zeroed-in on an American car; mostly just my prejudice but I think based on facts. I think long-term the reliablity will be higher if you go Japanese.

Consumer Reports magazine recommends lists of used cars each year in various price categories.
