The back checkers prefer even dice so maybe preparing the near side checkers for odd dice is the right approach. 5-3 appears pretty crappy, regardless. So 5-1 and 3-1 catch my attention. 3-1 plays great after 13/3, 8/3, 5/1. 5-1 plays OK. 3-1 plays poorly after 1(2), 3(2) and 5-1 plays poorly after 13/3(2). Note: you aren't required to play doublets in pairs.)
