Its like saying this lemon is almost the same as that orange, except that it has a slightly different shape and color, so why does it taste different?

Several people seemed to believe that they had an "explanation" for the correct play in Phil's original position. Phil, for example, said that MCG and Perry chose the correct play "for all the right reasons." But as far as I could tell, all those "explanations" would apply equally to the variant. We're ahead in the race in the variant. The opponent can't hold his position long in the variant. Seems like we could use exactly the same line of reasoning to "explain" why 17/2 6/1 is the right play in the variant. Except for one embarrassing fact: 17/2 6/1 doesn't seem to be the right play in the variant.

If your conclusion is that we don't have an explanation for either position, that's fine. Still, that's progress. At least now we know that we don't understand the position, rather than falsely thinking we did.
