I was using CA because it was free from road runner until about a year ago when I got tired of putting up with it and got rid of CA and went with free solutions. If you do a little research you will find several options for free virus protection and malware protection that are as good or better than most commercial programs. Daniel pointed you to bleeping computer which would be a good place to start, another good source is geekstogo.com.
For free antivirus Avira, Avast, and AVG all get good marks. Some of these will give you an occasional nag to upgrade to a paid version, but Avira which I use only does this once a day when it runs the signature update and it is not bad.
I run ad-aware in the background for malware, but recently saw a reference to spyware blaster on geekstogo so you might want to check that out.
Microsoft also has a free security suite now that has gotten some good reviews.
So I guess solution -- assuming you can get your computer running okay for a while -- is dump CA and go with programs. Also, note that if you think you have malware on your machine both geekstogo and bleeping computer offer free support where you can post to their forums and they will walk you through cleaning your machine.
