Thanks for the explanation, Jason. I've heard of / seen these before but had never looked into their derivation/generation.

Then, when we compute (f(x))^9, you get some gigantic polynomial (which I posted before).

You posted it here? Could you point to it?

Presumably you could use a computer with this method as well, although it appears as though if computers weren't allowed to find the exact solution you have a much better chance working out the answer by hand (i.e. w/pencil&paper) using this method than the one you and I originally found. :)
