But is the play correct? Should it not be something more adventurous at the score?

Dunno, hadn't thought about it. As long as the Nactation is correct... :)
For money or almost any other score, it looks like John's (White's) chosen C (Cross, 24/20 11/6) would have been clear.
At John's actual score of -4-2 (or at GG), he might have tried o (outer, 11/7 8/3) or c (cross, 24/20 8/3) or R (Run, 24/15) or maybe you have some other swashbuckling move in mind, but I doubt his (admittedly stodgy) C play can be far wrong (if wrong at all) even at the score.
C surely wins the most games, so for it to be right to make some other play (which is possible) John would presumably have to generate a lot of gammons by virtue of (a) tempting Gregg off the anchor with 20/14* (so that he doesn't get blocked by a covered 11pt or 7pt) -- a tightrope strategy because Gregg can choose not to hit, and/or (b) slotting his board to build it faster at the expense of exposing a shot with poor immediate tactical counterplay and/or failing to set his own back checkers in motion.
